Have you ever had a day where you feel sad or down for no reason? Or perhaps it was a small thing, like a news headline, a comment on social media, someone cutting you off at a junction, or even the weather? Anything, no matter how big or small, can cause an emotional response, and if that emotional response is a negative one, then your entire day can be ruined.
If this happens, it can mean that you are less productive at work (or perhaps you choose not to go to work at all), or you’re unable to communicate well with friends and family. However, even if nothing changes in your day, the fact that you feel bad is negative in itself; life is short and spending too much of it in a bad mood is a waste. With that in mind, here are some tips to improve your mood and boost your happiness every day, even if something has happened to make you feel unhappy.
Eat Right
Sometimes it can seem as though immediately looking for comfort food – food that is high in sugar and fat, or that reminds you of good times in the past, but that isn’t especially good for you – is the best thing to do when you’re feeling down because you know that it will make you feel better. However, although this is true because your reward systems will be activated, the feeling will be a short-lived one, and soon you’ll be back to feeling bad again, plus you’ll have eaten unhealthy food, so you might feel even worse because you will lack essential nutrients.
Eating when you’re feeling down can be helpful, but you need to eat the right things. If you can eat healthy food, your mood will still improve, but it will last much longer, and the entire day can be saved with a good meal.
Buy Something You Need
Just like eating comfort food, going shopping, and having what is often called retail therapy will spark the reward center of your brain, making you feel great and certainly making you happier. However, once again, this is temporary. When you come back to normal, you’ll find you have a lot of things you don’t really need or even want, you’re short on cash, and you’re still sad. The problem won’t have been solved.
Of course, if you buy something you need or something that helps other people, this is different. When your shopping ‘high’ has dissipated, you’ll still feel good because you’ve done something for yourself and maybe for others too. When you donate money where it's most-needed, and you know it’s going to make a huge difference in someone’s life, you’re sure to feel better about yourself, and anything that might have upset you will be put into perspective.
Go Outside
Since we spend so much of our time indoors in the 21st century, it’s easy to forget just what a healing place the outside world really is. So if you’re feeling down, go outside for a short walk, or even just sit on a bench in a park, breathing in the fresh air and watching the leaves fall or the flowers bloom. You’ll instantly feel better, and as well as that, you’ll sleep better and feel more refreshed and productive.
If you can’t go outside for any reason, try to get as much natural sunlight in your home or office as possible. Although breathing in fresh air is best, sunlight – in a safe way, of course – is also a good way to boost the mood.
